1 in 9 Campaign Sexual Violence = Silence Protest As part of Rape Awareness week we will repeat the SEXUAL VIOLENCE = SILENCE Protest that took place last year. We will be including both men and women in the protest action this year. WOMEN will spend the day (from 07h00 - 18h00) with their mouths taped shut, wearing t-shirts explaining that 1 in 9 women who are raped in SA annually go on to report the rape. 8 in 9 are silenced by sexual violence. All participants will remain silent all day and will go without food and water for the duration of the protest. MEN will spend the day wearing t-shirts explaining that 1 in 9 women who are raped in SA annually go on to report the rape and that men need to speak out about sexual violence. At 18h00 there will be a "Breaking the Silence" gathering in Eden Grove Blue for all volunteers and supporters where there will be a symbolic breaking of the silence and food will be distributed. This will be followed by an address by Ms Carrie Shelver - 1 in 9 Campaign Spokesperson who will be accompanied by 1 in 9 Campaign members from JHB, Cape Town and Durban and then a WASA panel discussion about the impact of the protest and the causes of violence will end the protest and Rape awareness week. |
